I am a big fan of Kirk Covington. I've seen him play several times with Tribal Tech (Gary Willis, Scott Kinsey and Scott Henderson).
The band used to tour often in support of a new CD.
Has anyone seen Kirk lately ? I would love to see him perform again. A very under-rated musician, he is also a great blues singer and a keyboard player as well !
Have any of you guys heard that he is still in the LA region ?
I've seen Kirk a number of times in the Scott Henderson Trio. They still play here in LA regularly.
Kirk is seriously good. He was playing some insane double bass stuff while singing during sound check at the last trio gig I caught.
Also caught him singing in Volto. (Danny Carey on drums) Great singer as well. That track, "Boat Gig" is classic.
Saw KC w the 'Tech...
Blew me away.
The guy is such a natural...sometimes the way he plays looks a bit strange to me, [grip, drum angles & heighths], but his playing is raw, aggressive, & kickin'...& he's a killer raspy-soulful-blues-rock vocalist AW...he should have a career gig solely based on that AW...of course, his drummer would have to be beeyatchin' & pass the "litmus test"... He's been quoted as saying things like "Man, I'm not as technical as Weckl / not in his league"...sheesh. He's his OWN kicker...the stuff he did w TT is killer. Aggressive improv interplay...that band reads each other like magic in live 'improv conversation'...
You might try checking some of those file-sharing softwares for some live boot Tech...
If anyone ever gets the chance to go see them live, GO...IMO, they are up there w all the great "pave the way" fusion bands like RTF, CCEB, Weather, Holdsworth, 'Jackets, Metheny, Maha. O, Zappa, Brand X, even the Dregs, TOP, or PX & OTV/SYI [altho different], etc...& all the groups that spawned fr the indy members of each in kind...[maybe even beyond]...in your face jazz rock fusion at it's best...some peeps call it "overkill," but when I'm in the right mood, it does it for me... Prob not "music to make love to your wife/mate" by, though...

I've seen Kirk several times and , wow, what intensity ! Once, after a Tribal Tech concert, I asked Kirk, " How do you get so much, so many chops in so little time into your fills, whether it be four or eight bars ?
He responded: " I guess I go through a moment of insanity while I'm doing it !" And like most musicians will tell you: If the Big Man From Texas is in town, DO NOT MISS IT. Make it a priority to be there and witness this great drummer, alone in his drumming style.
A really cool band to see is the one Kirk plays in with Scott Kinsey & Steve Tavaglione...serious modern-day Weather Report vibe. I always stop by for a set, and end up staying till close... [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Maybe my question was a little unclear, but what I was asking Kirk how he can take a chance and add so much in his fills/chops, and, contrary to most drummers, makes it !!!
Kirk does not go by the expression: When in doubt, roll !!

This past August, the Scott Henderson Blues Trio (with Kirk) did a live album recording over 4 nights at Lavelee. I saw this trio earlier in the year on the night Danny Carey sat in with them on Hendrix's 'Fire' while Kirk stood out front and sang.
Also saw Kirk's gig a while back ago in which he sings and plays keyboards - no bass player, just Kirk's left hand. Ray Brinker played drums that night - he's no slouch either which proves Fuse's earlier point of who Kirk gets to play behind him.
